A recent study has found that consumers prefer poetry written by artificial intelligence (AI) over works by renowned authors like Shakespeare and Lord Byron. In the research, readers described the virtual verses—unaware they were generated by a bot—as emotional, creative, and beautiful.
According to scientists, the use of simple and accessible language in AI-generated poetry has made it more enjoyable for readers compared to classical poetry. The study involved 2,300 participants who were not poetry experts and could not distinguish between the different types of poetry.
Published in the journal Scientific Reports, Brian Porter from the University of Pittsburgh noted that just as AI-generated paintings and portraits have started to resemble human creations, AI-written poems are also perceived as more human-like.
Interestingly, the research indicated that while participants initially praised the AI-generated poems, their appreciation diminished when they learned that the works were produced by artificial intelligence. This highlights a complex relationship between audience perception and the source of creativity.
